FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: NHRA Field Marketing, (626) 914-4761 DEFENDING EVENT WINNERS HOPE TO CAPITALIZE ON LAST YEAR’S SUCCESS AT S.R.C.A. DRAGSTRIP’S LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT GREAT BEND, Kan. – NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors in the West Central division will kick off the 2008 season April 25-27 at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip. The race is the first opportunity for competitors to earn “home division” points toward divisional and national championships. Some racers have gotten a jump in the points by competing in out-of-division events. The division’s reigning Top Alcohol Funny Car champ, Paul Anderson of Erie, Colo., is one such racer. He went to a Pacific division event in Tucson, Ariz., where he was runner-up. In fact, three other West Central division competitors made final-round appearances at that race. Mitch Mustard, Arvada, Colo., scored the Super Gas win while Steve Whitfield, Littleton, Colo., and Jeff Cheney, Cambridge, Minn., squared off in the Super Comp final with Whitfield coming out on top. Two more West Central division racers went to the final round at another Pacific division race, in Chandler, Ariz. Mike Cotton, Broken Arrow, Okla., won in Stock Eliminator and Abe Loewen, Regina, Sask., was runner-up in Super Stock. Last year’s S.R.C.A. event winners who claim the West Central division as their home turf, went on to have very successful seasons. None of them finished below fourth in the point standings in the class in which they won. Super Stock winner Gary Stinnet, Emporia, Kan., earned his ninth division title in that class and finished second in the Super Comp points while Comp Eliminator winner Richard Freeman, Pauls Valley, Okla., finished in second place in the points standings. Another Emporia resident, Luke Siebert, won here a year ago in Stock Eliminator and finished third in that category, as did Super Street winner, Roger Sauder, Sidney, Neb. Cheney won this event in Super Comp and finished third in the points but he earned his third division title in Super Gas. S.R.C.A.’s Super Gas winner, Kevin Moore of Littleton, Colo., finished fourth in point standing in that class. Brainerd (Minn.) Int’l Raceway will host the next West Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, May 23-25.
